Cassie O’Brien from Iowa is training for a marathon after surviving a rare cardiovascular condition that left her with a thirty-day prognosis, KCRG reported. Doctors previously told O’Brien that she would never be able to run, lift weights, or perform lunges due to her health condition. [1]

O’Brien was diagnosed with Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return, a rare heart disease, according to KCRG. On her thirty-first day, she stopped breathing, and her father performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until medical nurses arrived to assist. [1]

The American Heart Association will highlight O’Brien’s recovery story on Friday, October 16, during its annual Go Red for Women event, KCRG reported. The event raises awareness about cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death among women. [1]
