Hungarian media workers are rebuilding the country's public television network to restore independent scrutiny of government, CS Monitor reported. Journalist Antónia Mészáros stepped up to host the official relaunch of main public television channel M1 after former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was ousted from office in April. [1]
According to CS Monitor, Hungary's public media outlets were hollowed out during the 16 year tenure of Mr. Orbán, which forced journalists to choose between a pro government system and an adversarial independent media sector. M1 was left operating with a skeleton staff after many employees either left or were dismissed following the political transition. [1]
The modern state of Hungary traces its history back to the settlement of the Carpathian Basin around 895 AD before becoming a kingdom under Stephen I in 1000 AD. Journalists in the nation are now attempting to mark a clean break with past media practices to rebuild public trust. [1][3]
