A conservation partnership in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia, is working to restore degraded kelp forests, Mongabay reported. The effort is led by the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation in collaboration with the Redd Fish Restoration Society and West Coast Kelp. [1]
Clayoquot Sound is a body of water with numerous inlets and islands on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is bordered by the Esowista Peninsula to the south and the Hesquiaht Peninsula to the north. Major islands in the sound include Flores Island, Vargas Island, and Meares Island. [2]
The region was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2000 to integrate conservation with sustainable human activities. Clayoquot Sound contains one of the last intact tracts of ancient rainforest on Vancouver Island, within traditional Nuu-chah-nulth territories. [3]
The replanting initiative aims to rebuild damaged marine ecosystems through direct local action and collaboration among community groups and conservationists. [1]
