In 1781, Tony Small escaped slavery in South Carolina when his owners fled during the American Revolution, IrishCentral reported. Small walked onto a battlefield where he found Lord Edward Fitzgerald, a British officer, lying unconscious from injuries. [1]

Small carried the wounded officer back to his hut and dressed his injuries, according to IrishCentral. Following the rescue, Fitzgerald brought Small to Ireland, where the two men maintained a close friendship through the 1780s and 1790s. [1]

The two men shared a home in Leinster House in Dublin, IrishCentral noted. Wikipedia records that Leinster House was originally the ducal palace of the Dukes of Leinster before becoming the seat of the Oireachtas, the parliament of Ireland. [1][2]

Grokipedia notes that the Royal Dublin Society acquired Leinster House in 1815, and the Irish Free State government bought the building in 1924 as its permanent parliamentary home. According to IrishCentral, Small and Fitzgerald remained close until Fitzgerald died in Dublin's Newgate Prison. [1][3]
