Peptilogics has enrolled the first international patient in its pivotal Phase 2/3 RETAIN trial for zaloganan, BioSpace reported. The trial site is located in the United Kingdom at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the NIHR Clinical Research Facility: Leeds. Zaloganan, also known as PLG0206, is a first-in-class anti-biofilm drug candidate aimed at treating prosthetic joint infections. [1]

The U.K. trial is led by Dr. Hemant Pandit, who serves as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Leeds and Honorary Consultant, BioSpace reported. The drug candidate targets medical device-related infections, which present a serious challenge to patients undergoing joint replacement procedures. [1]

Prosthetic joint infection is an acute, sub-acute, or chronic infection affecting a prosthetic joint that presents with pain, swelling, and redness. It is estimated to complicate 1.4 to 2.5 percent of all joint replacements worldwide, occurring in about 2 percent of primary hip and knee replacements and up to 4 percent of revision replacements. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, systematic reviews have shown that pooled mortality reaches 11.0 percent for hip infections and 13.3 percent for knee infections. [5][7]
