Writers in Zamboanga have released a new poetry anthology to promote and preserve Chabacano, Global Voices reported. Chabacano is one of the 170 languages in the Philippines and is widely spoken in the southernmost city of Zamboanga. The language stands out as the only Spanish-based creole language in Asia. [1]
The Philippines was under Spanish colonial rule for over three centuries, during which Spanish was used primarily by colonial rulers, friars, and elite groups. Zamboanga was the only area where a Spanish-based creole language developed among the local population. Overall, between 130 and 195 languages are spoken across the Philippine archipelago. [1][3]
The new publication project showcases efforts by Chabacano speakers to write original literature and maintain the vitality of their native language. Global Voices reported that the project highlights the ongoing creative efforts of local writers to safeguard their heritage through written poetry. [1]
