A researcher at Mississippi State University has developed a mathematical model to investigate how metals influence the buildup of proteins associated with Alzheimer disease, ScienceDaily reported. The research shows how common metals such as copper and zinc may affect the process while exploring methods to stop it. [1]

ScienceDaily reported that the findings could assist scientists in identifying strategies to prevent harmful plaque formation in the brain. The mathematical model provides new insights into understanding how Alzheimer disease develops. [1]

Researchers have previously identified other targets to combat brain inflammation linked to neurodegenerative conditions. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, scientists led by Professor Nicholas Barnes published findings in the journal Brain showing that blocking the P2X7 receptor significantly reduces brain inflammation. [4]

That earlier study noted that existing drugs can already block the P2X7 receptor, which could speed up the repurposing of treatments for conditions including Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease, as HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier. [4]
