Kenya has recorded its first confirmed Ebola case, a Kenyan citizen who arrived from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and subsequently died, according to reports from The Guardian and BBC News. The health minister, Aden Duale, stated that the patient had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. [1][2]
The patient flew into Nairobi on Saturday and underwent public screening at the main airport before being transferred by a relative, BBC News reported. Aden Duale stated that 28 contacts have been identified so far, including family members and health workers. [1][2]
BBC News noted that the individual fell ill a month ago and received treatment in several hospitals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where an ongoing outbreak has caused more than 4,000 deaths this year. There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, although some have undergone trials. [2]
Ebola virus disease initial symptoms include high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, profound fatigue, and sore throat, with gastrointestinal manifestations emerging within three to five days of fever onset. The incubation period ranges from 2 to 21 days following exposure to the virus. [11]
