Researchers conducting genetic tests on Jonathan, an estimated 194-year-old giant tortoise believed to be the world oldest living land animal, have discovered key insights into healthy aging. Good News Network reported that scientists identified 287 unique gene variants that reduce the typical effects of biological aging in the tortoise. [1]

The findings indicate that Jonathan longevity, having hatched around 1832, is influenced by a lack of genetic wear and tear alongside healthy genes. Scientists noted that the tortoise reinforces existing biological understanding of healthy aging observed in humans. [1]

As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, Jonathan lives on St Helena island. Previous genome analysis showed that his mitochondrial function remains as efficient as that of a five-year-old tortoise, demonstrating genetic changes similar to those found in human supercentenarians. [8]
