Researchers have probed the genome of Jonathan, a 194-year-old giant tortoise living on St Helena island, to uncover the genetic secrets behind his long life, New Scientist reported. Jonathan is currently the oldest known living land animal in the world. [1]

The study revealed that parts of Jonathan's genome responsible for mitochondrial function are as efficient as those found in a 5-year-old tortoise of his species, according to New Scientist. Scientists believe these efficient mitochondria provide his DNA repair systems with the extra energy required to fight the effects of ageing. [1]

New Scientist reported that Jonathan has lived more than double the average life expectancy for his species. Geneticists also noted that some of the specific genetic changes found in his genome closely resemble those identified in human supercentenarians. [1]

In short

  • Jonathan the giant tortoise is estimated to be 194 years old and lives on St Helena island.
  • His mitochondrial function is as efficient as that of a 5-year-old tortoise.
  • Jonathan's genome shows genetic changes similar to those seen in human supercentenarians.
