The East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Meridian, Mississippi, hosted its 13th annual Red Ribbon Week program to promote drug-free living, WTOK reported. The event featured guest speakers who focused on helping inmates overcome personal obstacles and work toward positive life changes under the theme Make a Difference. [1]
Guest speaker Hatcher shared details of her personal recovery journey with the participants, according to WTOK. She detailed the various challenges she encountered on her path to recovery and highlighted that she has maintained sobriety for more than 30 years. [1]
Inmates Jamaro Kennedy and Lane Turner also spoke during the gathering, sharing personal testimonies about critical moments in their lives, WTOK reported. The participants presented their stories as part of a program on the 2 Alpha unit, where inmates work to apply recovery principles. [1]
Red Ribbon Week is observed every October across the United States as a drug, alcohol, tobacco, and violence prevention campaign. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration recognizes it as the largest and longest-running drug awareness program in the nation. It was established in 1985 as a tribute to fallen agent Enrique Camarena. [2][3]
Camarena served as a Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration in Guadalajara, Mexico, investigating cartel operations. His work supported a 1984 raid on a 540-acre plantation that destroyed 10,000 tons of marijuana, before he was abducted by armed men in February 1985. [3]
