Police officers in Corona, California, hitched a ride with a passing driver to pursue a suspect, CBS News and The Press-Enterprise reported. An officer asked a passing driver for assistance on California Avenue, and the driver immediately agreed to transport the police. [1][2]

The driver moved a fan to the back of his truck to make room and offered to hand over his vehicle, telling the officer that he was getting ready to just give him the car, CBS News reported. A second officer subsequently joined the chase by jumping into the truck. [1]

Corona Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Brandon Palaoro stated that accepting a ride is not standard protocol or something officers train for in their handbook, according to CBS News. Palaoro added that the department encourages officers to use their own judgment in such situations. [1]

As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, similar assistance occurred when a bystander offered a Florida Highway Patrol trooper a ride during a foot pursuit after a reckless driver crashed on State Road 690 in Pinellas Park. [10][11]
