A civic tech platform called SafeSteps is assisting women in Serbia to navigate public spaces safely, Global Voices reported. The initiative allows users to anonymously report the approximate locations of harassment, intimidation, or discomfort in public areas. [1]

According to Global Voices, many incidents of public harassment are never formally filed because some women believe that making official complaints will not result in meaningful change. SafeSteps addresses this challenge by tracking location patterns without collecting personal identities. [1]

The platform was supported through the Digital Spark granting scheme. Global Voices reported that the scheme operates as part of the Regional Support Mechanism EECA project, which is implemented by the Metamorphosis Foundation and TechSoup in partnership with CIVICUS under the Digital Democracy Initiative. [1]

The technological initiative emerges alongside broader civic actions in the country. Widespread public demonstrations and student-led protests calling for accountability expanded across 400 Serbian cities and towns starting in late 2024. [2]
