Activists in Pakistan are pushing for national recognition and official support for people with albinism, Global Voices reported. According to experts, the Pakistani government currently maintains no national data on individuals living with the condition. This absence of official counting leaves people with albinism without tailored support systems in schools, healthcare facilities, and employment opportunities across the country. [1]
Rising heat in Pakistan is also increasing health risks for people with albinism, Global Voices reported. Among those calling for greater understanding is 24-year-old Adeel Nasir, who lives with albinism in Kot Radha Kishan, a town situated in the Kasur district of Punjab Province. During his school years, Nasir had to constantly adjust to daily obstacles that those around him did not fully comprehend. [1]
Because of low vision, Nasir struggled to read information written on classroom whiteboards, Global Voices reported. While some teachers supported him by seating him closer to the board, improving classroom lighting, and giving him written notes, he still faced painful experiences. In one classroom incident, Nasir asked a teacher what qualifications were required to become a fighter pilot. [1]
