Ian Winship, a 90-year-old runner from Cumbernauld, received a special over-90s category trophy at Broadwood Stadium on Tuesday. Glasgow Live reported that the trophy was awarded after Mr Winship completed the North Lanarkshire 10K on September 13 in 1:04:37. [1]
His finish time is believed to be a world best time for his age group. According to Glasgow Live, Mr Winship returned to the race start point to accept the honor, where organisers praised him as an inspiration for his athletic achievement. [1]
Mr Winship told the Press Association that he felt grateful but embarrassed to receive the award. He noted that Cumbernauld is an ideal area for running due to its surrounding trees and forests, and attributed his fitness to walking 20,000 steps each day. [1]
Unofficial road running records for masters age groups are tracked by the Association of Road Racing Statisticians, as World Masters Athletics does not publish world records for most non-marathon road racing distances. [2]
