Western University Biochemist Fred Possmayer Inducted to Canadian Medical Hall of Fame

Western University professor emeritus Fred Possmayer has been named as a 2027 inductee to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, Education News Canada reported. The recognition honours his work pioneering a surfactant therapy that helps at-risk premature infants survive respiratory distress syndrome. [1][4]

When Possmayer began his research at Western University in the 1970s, more than half of premature babies who developed respiratory distress syndrome died from the condition, according to Education News Canada. His life-saving surfactant treatment has since been used to treat more than 160,000 premature babies in Canada and around the world. [1][4][5]
