Chinese battery manufacturer Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. is developing semi-solid-state cells designed to offer higher energy density and improved safety over traditional lithium-ion batteries, MIT Tech Review reported. The company creates liquid-solid hybrid cells to deliver increased power to electric transportation. [1][2]

According to MIT Tech Review, the technology is intended for use in electric cars, cargo ships, boats, and drones. WeLion New Energy aims to make safer, higher capacity energy storage solutions for these modern transportation applications. [1]

The company is headquartered in the Fangshan District of Beijing and originated as a spinoff from the Laboratory of Renewable Energy at the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. WeLion is best known for supplying the world's first mass produced semi-solid-state battery cells for an automotive traction battery application, which powers Nio's 150 kWh swappable battery pack.
