Researchers at the University of Southern California have discovered that rejuvenating aging liver cells can lower markers for Alzheimer's disease and heart disease, ScienceDaily reported. In studies conducted on rats, an experimental drug restored aging liver cells to a healthier state. [1]
According to ScienceDaily, the experimental treatment cut levels of a protein linked to Alzheimer's disease in half. It also reduced bad cholesterol levels back to youthful figures and revived a previously unknown communication system that supports cellular function. [1]
Research into biological aging and rejuvenation methods focuses on delaying brain aging and extending health, Wikipedia notes. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, scientists at the University of Bonn previously reprogrammed blood cells from an 80 year old person into neural stem cells with a molecular age under 20. [2][4]
The findings suggest that targeting organ aging outside the brain, specifically within the liver, could offer a new avenue to fight serious age related human diseases, ScienceDaily reported. [1]
In short
- An experimental drug restored aging liver cells in rats.
- The treatment cut levels of an Alzheimer's-linked protein by half.
- Bad cholesterol levels in the rats were reduced to youthful levels.
